Like other people we were concerned about the big heap of used nappies in front of our door when we became parents. Only 1 % of the population (toddlers) cause almost 10 % of the entire residual waste! That time we lived with our children in Budapest (Hungary) where everybody was used to change their babies with muslins and simple plastic foils, while using disposables was only affordable for privileged people. Although it was a bit laborious and not too safe, we felt good to use washable nappies for our children! Our children barely got toilet trained when I saw for the first time adjustable nappies on a friend's baby in Canada. I was so enthusiastic that I immediately decided to work for this project in the future. For more than a year I collected samples and information from divers producers. My lounge became a tailoring. Soon after one couldn't find any bale of flannel in the city, so many nappies have been sewn. In autumn 1991 we finally started our first Popolini nappy shops in Vienna and Graz with a venturous but simple concept: „Everything for changing (in real nappies)“ Within a few weeks we sold all our nappies - they went like hotcakes. This happend 12 years ago - since then the nappies have been improved constantly and PoPoLiNi became already a synonym for real nappies.
